 International Adoption Program

More than 16,000 children a year are adopted by American families from abroad. They are mostly from China, Russia, Eastern Europe and South America. Many of these children are raised in orphanages. Developmental delays and attachment disorders are common in this population. Infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis are also common.

Goryeb Children’s Hospital’s multidisciplinary clinic serves as a resource for the primary pediatrician and the parents to guide the future care of these children. The clinic’s services range from reviewing pre-adoption videotapes and giving traveler’s health advice to the prospective parents to an initial assessment of the newly arrived child and provision of a care plan to their pediatrician.

This service is now provided at the Goryeb Children’s Hospital Outpatient Suite on the second floor. The pediatrician will perform follow-up care after the initial visit and both the parents and the pediatrician will receive a written summary of the team’s findings.
