Girl Street
Girl Street is based at Overlook Hospital. It provides a unique service for pre-teen, adolescent and young adult women. Services include gynecologic evaluations, sexuality and family planning guidance, and STD treatment. Psychiatric and adjustment issues, including eating disorders, are assessed utilizing a holistic approach designed specifically for adolescent women. The professional staff includes adolescent medicine specialists, a social worker, and a nutritionist. The program also provides community resources for parents, schools and local organizations. For an appointment or more information please call 908-522-2555. Girl Street, initiated in 1999, combines traditional pediatric medical care with specialized support for emotional concerns to meet the needs of adolescent girls. The Program uses a multidisciplinary team approach, which includes physicians board-certified in adolescent medicine, a social worker and a nutritionist, all of whom are specially trained to diagnose and treat common problems in young women. Popular magazines and scholarly research studies all point to the same thing – young girls are reacting to strong cultural messages long before they can figure out their own strengths. The emergence of new health issues, such as eating disorders and substance abuse, often results. In addition, existing medical problems, such as irregular menstrual periods, obesity, and thyroid disease, become more complicated. Difficulties at home and school only adds to the pressure. |
