Diagnosis

Patients are referred to the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute’s Epilepsy Center for one of the following reasons:

• Diagnosis of epilepsy is unclear
• Diagnosis of a seizure disorder has been given, but the type of epilepsy has not been definitively established
• Use of medication as a treatment option has not been totally successful
• Patient has been seizure free for some time, and wishes to discontinue their antiepileptic medication

Patients who are referred to our center for an epilepsy consultation will meet with an epileptologist (a neurologist with specialty training in epilepsy) who takes a complete history, performs a physical exam and reviews all relevant medical records.  Typically a diagnosis is clear and treatment is initiated immediately, if needed.  Some patients, however, may require additional testing.
